Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCL) for Containment, Ponds & Civil Engineering
Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs) are low-permeability lining systems used to help control the movement of water and other liquids in civil engineering, environmental containment and water management applications.
GCLs typically combine a layer of sodium bentonite clay with geotextile layers to create a compact engineered barrier. When correctly installed and hydrated under confinement, the bentonite swells to form a low-permeability seal.
Common applications include:
- Ponds, lakes and lagoons
- Stormwater attenuation and SuDS schemes
- Reservoirs and water containment
- Environmental containment
- Landfill lining and capping applications
- Wetlands and reed beds
- Groundwater protection projects
- Civil engineering lining systems
Drainage & Civils Direct supplies geosynthetic clay liners in different roll widths and formats, allowing contractors and specifiers to select a suitable option based on project size, site access, handling requirements and specification.
Our range includes GCL systems from established manufacturers, with compatible bentonite jointing and detailing products available where required.
For projects where a polymeric impermeable liner is specified instead, view our HDPE geomembrane range. For projects requiring protection or cushioning around impermeable liners, we also supply 300gsm non-woven protection geotextiles.
Correct GCL selection and installation will depend on the project design, ground conditions, containment requirements and manufacturer’s installation guidance. If you’re unsure which liner or roll format is most suitable, contact our team for product availability, technical information and project pricing.
